The resolution of names through the use of Domain Name System (DNS) is central to Windows operation. Without proper name resolution, users cannot locate resources on the network. It is critical that the design of the DNS namespace be created with Active Directory in mind and that the namespace that exists on the Internet not conflict with an organization’s internal namespace. Which Server Operating System is Ideal? Unix or Windows

August 10, 2010 by admin

One person has decided to create a website. What is the foremost thing he requires first? It is surely web hosting. Besides other miscellaneous things, like cost and features, he has to make a choice between which servers he has to prefer: Is that Windows (NT, 2000 or XP) or UNIX (Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc.).

If one measures them on the basis of their merits. The inference will be a least difference. But in case a user gives the priority to stability, or ease of use, UNIX based servers wins the race. Generally, Windows servers are preferred, as they need not to be rebooted in continuous occasions and are easier to administer and use. It is obvious for many beginners to be in dilemma over the pros and cons of the different operating systems. UNIX’s prime drawback is using a command line interface for administration, which is similar to original MS-DOS interface creating a head ace for a beginner. Also, updating of kernel and software at regular time period is essential for the stability of a UNIX machine, which is far harder than Windows. It can be tackled to work swiftly, if the user’s web host possesses good administration software.

If a person is using scripting, he has to consider once more while choosing an operating system. If the answer is yes, then the next question will arise i.e. what sort of? For example, if one should has decided to go along with PERL language to create a dream, dynamic site, then it is recommended that he/she must go for UNIX operating system. Above statement is also accurate for the languages like PHP, and Pythlon. But if one selects an ASP based site then nothing can be the best choice than Windows. However, to worse the matter further some UNIX systems can give the choice of ASP scripts in them, though the class of the script implementation is adversely affected.

One should need to maintain the software with patches from Microsoft’s website at least once in a week to prevent it from being exploited, if he/she is using a Windows-based web server (because it does not come in the category of host’s responsibilities).

UNIX administrators will only have to do it on the monthly basis only or one can say that UNIX is quite adapted to such conditions.

At the end one can say that both the operating systems (UNIX and Windows) have there own merits and both have the potential to satisfy the customer. But one should not ignore the operating costs and likewise other aspects before coming to any form of inference.

Multiprocessing in a computer system is done to to run more than one program at the same time. This enables you to get the maximum results out of your system in a shorter time. Although multiprocessors systems are well known for their reliability, but they are no exception, when it comes to corruption. Sometimes, you may encounter system crash problems on a multiprocessor system. After which, the system prompts a STOP error message causing the system to become unbootable. The situation worsens as the data stored in the hard drive gets inaccessible. But, you need not worry as a healthy and valid data backup file can still be used to restore your data. However, if the backup is absent, incomplete, or corrupt, then you need to use specialized Hard Drive Recovery services.

For instance – At times, when you use multi processors on a Windows Server 2008-based system, the system may crash followed by the below mentioned STOP error message:

“*** STOP: 0×00000101 (Prameter1, Prameter2, Prameter3, Prameter4)
CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT “

As a result of this error message, the system becomes unbootable and the hard drive data becomes inaccessible. Furthermore, this STOP error occurs each time you try to boot your system.

Cause:

A Windows Server 2008-based system encounters this problem because of a race condition in the system Interprocessor Interrupt (IPI) mechanism.

Resolution:

Consider the following measures to resolve the problem:

This problem can be resolved by installing the hotfix solution provided by Microsoft. After applying the hotfix, you will have to restart your system.

NTLDR (NT Loader) is the most essential file that is needed by the Windows NT (Server 2003, XP, and Server 2000) systems to boot. It is run from the primary hard disk drive and contains the main Boot loader. The well-being of NTLDR is very significant for the boot process as if this file is missing, then your system would not be able to boot.

The NTLDR file may get missing or corrupted due to various reasons, such as virus infections, power outages, damaged operating system, etc. In such cases, you should consider taking appropriate corrective measures to rectify the problem. However, if you are unable to resolve the issue then you should use a third-party Windows hard drive recovery software to do the needful.

Consider a scenario wherein you have a Windows Server 2003 system. When you start the system, it fails to do so. An error message is displayed, that is:

“NTLDR is missing

Press any key to restart”

Cause:

For the aforementioned error message, there are following reasons:

The BIOS settings of the system are outdated

Any or all of the following files are either corrupted or missing:

boot.ini

Ntdetect.com

Ntldr

Resolution:

To resolve your computer system from the aforementioned problems and access the Windows system, you need to perform the following methods:

Check the BIOS settings: Verify the BIOS settings and check if the latest version of the BIOS is installed on your computer.

Repair the Windows repair environment: Repair the Windows repair environment if any of the aforementioned files is missing or damaged. You can perform it by using any of the following methods:

By using a boot disk that contains all the mentioned files.

By using the Recovery Console to copy the mentioned files to your computer.

By using the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM to repair the Windows Startup Environment.

The problem will be resolved using the aforementioned methods. However, if you are still not able to address the issue then you should use a third-party Windows hard drive recovery software to do the needful. Such read-only tools are able to recover the hard drive contents without overwriting the original contents.
