Things One Should be Aware of While Selecting a Web Host

There are several web hosts which try anxiously to get contract of hosting from the user to root themselves in the beginning era into a stable hosting provider, for that they hide several things from the user. Coming next are the things which the user should never hope to be get informed from there host. For an instance, web hosts which are new in the market, many times do not have the facility to provide service to the users. Low cost or budget web hosting services are generally comes in such sort of category. In this there are two categories of hosts, one, who neglects to provide details of services to the users and another who show the mirage of outstanding (24/7) service which, is a mere misconception.
There are several hosts in the market which are cheap, however, not experienced in this field. One straightforward and ideal way to inquire about the level of service is to get the customer care number and apply it before dealing with the host. This will prove whether the service is up to the expectation or not.
Another hidden fact is that several web-hosting enterprises are inexperienced. The user should verify that the host he/she is dealing with is experienced or not, even to some extent. The user has the right to know about the work experience of the host because no one wishes to become a puppet for conducting experiments.
Another crucial factor is that while dealing with a low cost or budget web hosts, the host may be involved in several other businesses including web hosting. The user should remain aware of their other sorts of businesses or projects before signing up with them. In hosting a user requires specialized person instead of generalized person bearing various tasks together, applying both resources and time for providing faithful services to the customer.
It is also a misconception that few cheap web hosts will definitely provide the promised bandwidth, which is not true in real sense. It is important that they should not advertise one thing and end up providing something else as it can be treated as a fraud.
Preferring short term contracts at beginning is one of the ideal ways to prevent oneself from any of the undesirable surprises. Doing payment as per monthly charges can be effective. This will not only display one as a responsible and smart user but also assists to easily change the host in the condition of dissatisfaction.

3 Web Hosting Terminologies that you should know

Today, with a flood of websites, everyone in this planet will be aware of web hosting. If you haven’t heard of the word “web hosting”, then you are probably living in some other planet. That is the extent of the popularity of web hosting today. Everyone in this world knows that web hosting is a service where some space is rented in the web server to accommodate your website. This is only a basic definition of web hosting. Just keep reading on the article to go deep into web hosting and know the 3 most important terminologies used in modern web hosting.
1. The Server type
Two common server types used today fro web hosting are dedicated and shared servers. Both the types of web hosting have their own application. While shared servers are useful for small websites (cheap and sufficient for small websites with less visitors). As the name indicates, your websites will be accommodated in the servers along with some other websites too. The server space will be shared among several websites. On the other hand, the dedicated servers (where one server will be made available exclusively for one website) enable faster surfing experience for the visitors. The pricing of the dedicated server type web hosting will be higher when compared to the shared ones. People have a misconception that the shared web hosting will get a slow surfing experience. For the moment of truth, the shared web hosting option can also provide the same speed as the dedicated hosting provided the fact that you choose the best shared web hosting service provider.
2. Bandwidth
Bandwidth is a measure of data transferred through a website. The downloads, uploads and the page views in a website are measured as bandwidth. Most of the web hosting services providers limits the bandwidth allocated to a website. The website will be no longer functional once the data usage exceeds the bandwidth allocated to the particular website. Hence the bandwidth is one of the important factors to be considered while choosing the web hosting plan for your website.
3. Types of Operating system
Most of the today’s web servers are running on UNIX operating systems. One of the main advantages of UNIX operating systems is that they are open source. It means that the source codes of the UNIX operating systems are readily available for editing. UNIX operating systems have taken many forms today. Among the different forms of UNIX operating systems, Linux and BSD are the most popular ones.
Another very popular, renowned operating systems for web hosting is Windows. The windows based servers are well known for their user friendliness. However, the windows based servers are costly when compared to the UNIX based ones. Moreover, the windows servers are not open source. However, with the popularity of Microsoft and the user friendliness of the windows operating system, they are widely used by the web hosting service providers to day.
These are some of the must know terminologies of web hosting.

Should I Use a Linux or a Windows Server?
May 11, 2010 by admin
Even some folks who are pretty computer savvy, and can make Microsoft Office jump through hoops, are less knowledgeable when it comes to the operating system (OS) and networking technology that drives the Internet. Most people who do not work in that end of the business need to do a little homework when confronted with the question, Should I use a Linux or Windows server?
There are some arcane hybrids and do-it-yourself OS schemes around, but the OS choice you have at most hosting companies today is between Linux and Windows. Hosting companies don’t always clarify exactly why one might be better than the other for a particular customer or situation, leading some folks to conclude that there is really no difference at all. This is not the case. It does matter what kind of server you use, and there are clear differences between Linux and Windows.
Licensing costs money
All the various flavors of Windows, from the multiple versions of the new Windows 7 to the “enterprise” (server) packages, belong wholly to Microsoft, also known as the “Evil Empire” to the hackers and open source fans that prefer Linux. Linux, being open source, is free. This is the first major difference with important repercussions, since the hosting company’s costs for licensing Windows will be passed on to the customer (that’s you). Free, open source Linux means lower hosting costs all around, if only by a few dollars per month.
Getting a Windows hosting package is going to be a bit more expensive, but not so much more that you should make the difference a deal-breaker. Other factors — the make and model of the servers, company location, package offer details — can affect pricing as much or more, so make sure to get the big picture and don’t bog yourself down in an “OS controversy.” That said, you should know the operational, stylistic and tech-related differences between the two server types in order to make an informed decision.
Slow down and consider
Now, simply because you use a PC with Microsoft (MS) Windows, or even built your own Web site with it, doesn’t mean you have to have a Windows server. You will access your site through such tools as Web-based control panels and FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software, and can do so from a Macintosh running Mac OS X, a PC running Windows 7 or a homemade computer running Mandrake or RedHat (distributions of Linux). Some commands will differ, perhaps, but all the tools do the same thing, in much the same way.
Slow down enough to consider what you actually need to do with your site and what you expect from the server (and hosting firm). E-mail protocols, both IMAP and POP, work fine in both environments, as do PHP, the standardized HTML and XML, JavaScript and “file helpers” like Adobe Flash and Reader. However, Frontpage extensions, ASP, the .Net environment, Access, Windows media and other MS technologies will require a Windows server. For these particular features, Linux support ranges from limited to non-existent, and trying to work around the restrictions will cost you a lot more than paying the difference between the hosting packages.
Security and management
There have been some contentious arguments about the relative stability and security records of Linux and Windows server environments. Some computer professionals are simply knee-jerk anti-MS partisans, and there are also any number of MS fans that are anti-Linux (as well as anti-Mac). The fact that Windows is the most common OS in the world has both advantages and drawbacks. Millions of people are working on making it better, and just as many are trying to shoot it down in flames.
On the other hand, Linux is now most common server OS in use and hackers have had greater than expected success subverting it, too. The fact is that the platform in use is not as important to security as systems administration, attentive technicians and company management. If security is high on your list, you need to examine the company as much or more than the company’s equipment. Don’t take their marketing materials as a promise — do some due diligence here. It matters.
A toss-up?
There is probably little difference in server performance because of the choice of OS. Again, it can come down to how the companies install their software and maintain their hardware — Linux just might be “faster” in some functions than Windows if, in fact, the Windows OS was installed in default mode and not “tweaked.” (This can be true of Linux installs, too, of course.) In the broadest terms, performance is comparable and you can have a fine, effective and efficient hosting experience with either kind of server.
The bottom line is that you should certainly consider the kind of server, particularly if you use MS technologies than need a Windows environment, but your search should be for a good host, not a good server. A company with the best equipment in the world will be no help to you if it is mismanaged, oblivious to security lapses and technologically out of its depth. With a rough equivalence in features, reliability, security and cost, a “winner” is impossible to choose beforehand. You can win — or lose — with any kind of server, so keep looking at the big picture and just make your decision.

Should You Use Free or Paid Web Hosting for a Personal or Business Site?

Web hosting is a type of Internet service that provides organizations and individuals their web site access through the World Wide Web. Web hosting also provides space on servers for their clients’ use and gives them internetInternet connectivity which can be easily located in a data center.
Hosting companies provide web content management systems. This is useful for the clients as it will take care of other technical aspects. This is also great for those people who are not really familiar with complicated computer programs. But this imposes great disadvantage for people who want to have more controls to their website design and features as the system limits them.
Web hosting reviews on the top web hosts give an insight on respective web hosting companies. It is advised to search in search engines for the reviews on the products you are interested in and analyze it thoroughly before completing your transaction.
Normally top web hosting companies are ranked using these categories: the overall quality of the service, the combination of all user reviews, the price, the disk space, its bandwidth, and all the other special features.
All most all web hosting companies provide web hosting coupons that will surely save a lot of money for its clients. The top web hosts vary in terms of service scope, but all of these provide the most basic features which include: control panel with Fantastico, FTP access; MySQL, PHP, and email.
There are many Internet service providers (ISPs) that give free service to their subscribers. A personal web page is typically free (or it may come cheap) as this is sponsored by advertisers. On the other hand, business web site hosting is often a paid service. The company host also provides an interface, also known as control panel, for managing the web server and for establishing scripts. It also provides other services such as e-mails.
Some company hosts opt for specialized software and services like e-commerce. These are used by other larger companies to outsource network infrastructure to its host. Web hosting is often provided as part of Internet access plan. There are free or paid providers offering these kind of services. Before you choose a hosting company, evaluate the applications and requirements of a certain company. Always consider the scripting software, database server software, and the operating system it uses.
Typically, hosting providers offer Linux-based web hosting which provides different software applications. As a customer you may also choose Windows for a hosting platform. Common services are: Perl, PHP, ASP.Net, Classic ASP, and Python. Web hosting clients may choose to have other services like emailFFmpeg for streaming video media or other specific tools or programs that fit the needs of their site.
The public should know that free web hosting servers should not be used for any personal or business purpose. The main reason is that you get what you pay for. Free web hosting often comes with the increased risk of downtime, poor technical support, and lack of services that most clients require in a web host. If you take your site(s) serious you should opt for quality paid web hosting to avoid such risks.
William Santos advises before signing up for any web hostingplan see if the provider has a web hosting review done by an independant person. Usually these reviews will tell you any problem areas the reviewer has experianced with the hosting company. Thus saving you having the same problems. Review type sites will also give you the benefits and features as well as prices of the sites they mentioned and can save you hours of shopping around.

How The Structure And Design Of Your Website Determines What Web Host You Should Use
December 23, 2009 by admin
When you are choosing a web host for your web page, the first thing you need to consider is the design of your site. Is your spot on the web going to be a personal page where you put up pictures to share with your family? Or is it going to be the web presence of your business, which you want to be as professional as possible?
Or perhaps it will be the e-meeting place for a quilting club? These are all possibilities, and each will inform which host you should go with. If, for instance, you want a simple website to communicate personal thoughts, perhaps a service such as GeoCities or livjournal would suffice. But these two options lack the professional police that you would want if you were putting your company’s information on the web, even if that company is small. Remember that professionalism is as much an attitude as it is a market share. Web hosting such as GeoCities can be characterized as free, and plastered over with mandatory advertisements that pay money to the web hosts.
Business websites tend to be more demanding than personal websites. So if you are going to set up a business site, consider what you need. If you are going to sell merchandise, you will have to set up a secure socket layer (SSL) to transmit sensitive information, such as credit numbers and addresses. You will likely need to find a host that supports database management, which will allow the use of such protocols as ASP.NET, Java, and PHP. A web hosts that doesn’t provide these things is insufficient for a business site.
You should also think about how much space you will need on the web, because every host offers a different amount. If you are going to upload a lot of media, you will likely need more space, for instance, than you would if you are just going to have a text-based web journal. As a rule of thumb, you will need at minimum 50MB of space for twenty web pages. As bells and whistles, and flash videos, are added on, that number increases. Plan accordingly.
And finally, here is a rubric to consider. Websites material can be broken down into three general categories, basic, database driven, and multimedia. All websites contain basic features, HTML coding and other structural tidbits, whether the site was uploaded ten years ago or is featured on YouTube.
Database driven material is material that is managed by PHP, Java, and similar protocols. This is a bit more demanding in terms of hard drive space than basic. Multimedia material is all that glitters and blinks on the web, and it is the most space demanding of all three. If your site needs a lot of multimedia items, then make sure that you find a host that can store them.

Managed Web Hosting and What You Should Know About It

Managed web hosting is an improved version of the traditional shared hosting. It is to be noted here that managed web hosting basically handles the server hardware management, as well as the Internet connection. Self Managed web hosting is usually used by experienced web developers who do not require the assistance of the web hosting technical support staff. Resource upgrades and plan revisions are always available.
The right host also has equal expertise in providing colocation and data centre services. Colocation involves a server, usually a Web server of the company to be located at a dedicated facility designed with resources that include a secured cage or cabinet, regulated power, dedicated Internet connection, security and support. In order to give our clients the best possible hosting experience, Chinook Webs maintains our own web hosting data center in Calgary, Alberta Canada. We have full control over our servers and our network. Companies providing managed hosting solutions can offer a variety of hosting-related products including server security products, private networking, and database administration. Managed hosting service can be considered as an upgraded version of web hosting. Many hosting providers will have a “premium” support offering that includes a bit more hand holding – this is definitely recommended if you don’t have much experience with Linux, or are new to virtual dedicated hosting.
Mostly, companies who opt for dedicated web hosting service, will usually decide to go for a managed web hosting solution because the hosting company will handle most of the task associated with managing the dedicated host.
