Points to Consider While Selecting a Web Host Server

Managing a web server is in reality not a child’s play as it is a full time job, where one must constantly monitor its performance and security and it sounds, it is really exhausting task, especially if one is already having other responsibilities. There are several advantages like one no longer have to wait for technical support or approval to install a script onto the server. In addition, one can have as many websites and databases he/she requires but condition is, as long as his/her hardware can handle it. One no longer has to go into the discussion forums and search for the best web host. Over all one can even begin hosting family & friends personal websites. Thus after looking at these advantages it really sounds interesting. Isn’t? But wait just read more.

One should ask him/her self, how technically advanced he/she is? Quite often one needs not to be fully learned, but it’s necessary that he/she is possessing resources. One must know how to resolve issues and how to handle problems and that too quite quickly and efficiently. Thus it means it needs to be in real meaning Internet savvy. In this case just surfing wont help as one who surfs aimlessly wont be of any use, rather one who can always find what he/she is looking for is the right person. This is a main requirement, as with any server environment, one is going to run into problems and finding the answers are most consummate online, using multiple resources, search techniques, and engines. Now if one is sure that he/she can hire someone to fix one’s problems then too it’s not at all considered a best option to get done from anyone else. In next paragraph is the test to see if one is ready to find solutions. Requirement is of a solution to a Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Event Error – “Event ID: 1056” it’s a DHCP Server Error. Now how one would search for this?

In order to find the solution the first that one would take is to go to Google which can be seen as a good and a common effort also it is a good place to start, but usually it is best to start at the developers’ website. Thus in this case “microsoft.com” would have been the first option because Google would more than likely provide with the solution from Microsoft and other sources, but if one is not interested in getting inaccurate information from other sources, then surely he/she should choose going to Microsoft directly. It is a common practice to get information from Microsoft that not only helps resolving one’s problem, but also helps saving time. Now again one should search the error and should go to the Microsoft site and find the solution.

After going this one will find this link-http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? Scid=KB; en-us; 282001 (Event ID 1056 is Logged after installing DHCP)

Now after seeing the above what search phrase should one use? The answer is Event ID: 1056, because the Event ID is the correct and most exact error; it helps in providing the exact solution for one’s problem without broadening the search. Sometimes it may happen that the error description is also appropriate to search, just the error description by itself or in combination with the Event ID. It all depends on one’s error, his/her search feedback, his/her ability, and last but not least technique. For the above discussed example error description is not included.

Now after Microsoft, the second option one should take is Google or Yahoo, which are considered as two largest search engines. Thereafter one should search other smaller and niche search engines and then the next one should search within forums and discussion groups. If one is well known of Internet and have a plentiful or few forums and discussion groups, which he/she uses quite frequently, then he/she should visit those places before visiting Google or Yahoo. One can also visit those before visiting the developer site since it is a trusted source, but its not very recommendable as going first to developers’ site would be considered as a best option. So now after knowing little about search engines and internet one can think of purchasing a server.

After the completion of the website next very important decision is to make it visible to the entire world, for this there arise needs for selecting an appropriate web host. The following are some of the factors to keep in mind while selecting an appropriate web host:-

1. How to make site accessible?

If one has applied for a web host provider he/she should take several aspects into consideration for e.g. what time it takes to load, the period of time it is up etc. These aspects are very important because problems are present related to them, this can create extreme irritation and renouncement of the potential visitors.

As search engines due to difficulties in loading do not show those web pages which are always down. That’s why the same potential can have complications in locating one’s website.

The best way to check if the server is up or not is by looking over the reviews written by other persons who have applied for the server before the user.

2. Is the host offering SSL??

The SSL protection is not necessary for a hobby websiter .However if transactions should be made in the near future by the user it is necessary for him/her to choose the web host which includes the SSL protection upfront.

It is normally applied for encrypting any piece of information for e.g. credit card codes, names, etc.

If the user is dealing up to a web host who is excluding SSL protection and giving preference to it later on will harm rather then benefiting as it could turn up to be more expensive than for a web host which provides SSL in the first priority.

3. Whether server side scripting accessible from the server or not.

In spite of the fact that these server side scripting is the facility available in all the servers, but still user must conform that they do it or not. Pages changing in real time are given the opportunity to be created by the webmasters due to the availability of server side scripting.

For example, if one is taking case of running a business and having all products systemized in a database, the server side scripting will give off the pages via the ranges the customers prefer to see.

One should not think of using a server which does not provide functionality for a server side scripting.

4. Customer Support

While choosing a web host the top priority must be given to the support which they are providing to the customers. This point is also applicable to an experienced webmaster, before signing up with a website. There are several hosts who have created special forums for frequently asked questions (FAQ-S).

Above all, points are quite popular still there is need to give special consideration to them. Thus one can enjoy the benefits of web hosting by just doing slight homework.

Choosing a best hosting service for your website can prove very difficult many a times. You can find limitless options on the internet and all of them claim to be the top hosting providers at the least expensive service. Such a scenario can make it almost impossible for webmasters to select the hosting service that perfectly suits their need. So to best way to come out of this kind of difficulty is to take the selection process one step at a time.

List out Your Needs

The first basic step to take care of in selecting the best hosting service for your website is to identify your needs accurately. Such need depends on the type or sort of website that you want to host. The needs of a small basic personal website are very much different related to hosting criteria from large company websites. To find the best hosting service for you, it is important to be clear with what you plan to host in the present time or in immediate future.

Select your Budget

Variety of web hosting companies offer a large variety of plans and rates. These rates differ from one company to another. Companies offering dedicated servers and huge bandwidth charge higher rates as compared to others that offer budget hosting with limited web space and bandwidth. There are many factors to consider in this competitive world while selecting a web hosting company. It is advisable that you should not stop at your price if in case you plan on using your website in a professional capacity. For a professional website you must look to move beyond free web hosting. A Free web hosting service proves great for a small family or fun site but it is not much helpful to the needs of internet marketers. In most case rate is not a top determining factor when you want the best outcome from the service.

Determining Reliability and Speed

The best hosting services will offer your website with uptime of over 99%. So reliability is also an important factor while making such decisions. A best hosting service provider gives full guarantee to keep all servers up all the time. Also along with reliability the visitors should also be able to access the site quickly and easily.

Disk Space and Data Transfer

As your site becomes popular your Bandwidth requirements also grow with it. The owner of the site is billed according to its bandwidth usage by the Web hosting companies. So you must prefer to pay for the required amount of data transfer initially and avoid any kind of surprise bills for having gone considerably over your allotted amount. Along with it you should also have an appropriate amount of disk space reserved for your website files and scripts.

Determining Host’s Technical Support

Along with all the decisive factors above it is very important to be able to contact the hosting company in case your website begins experiencing problems. The best hosting support should be available in your service for 24 x 7.

Selecting a Quality Domain Name

When you’re ready to launch your web site and you’re trying to select a good domain name, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration.

Select a Domain Name that Reflects Your Web Site

Above all else, your domain name should reflect what your web site is all about. For example, if your web site is about grooming a dog, you certainly wouldn’t want to select a domain name like ‘mybusinessname.com,’ as this would have nothing to do with your web site’s focus. You would want to select a domain name that tells the world what your web site is all about — something like ‘doggrooming.com.’

Select a Domain Name that Contains Your Web Site’s Keywords

Another consideration of great importance are your keywords. Try to select a domain name that contains your most relevant keyword phrase, as some Search Engines place relevancy on them. A keyword phrase is two or more words that best describe your web page. If your web page is focusing on grooming a dog, your best keyword phrase will be “dog grooming.”

Select a Domain Name that will be Easily Remembered

With millions of web sites accessible on the Internet, it is also very important to select a domain name that will be easily remembered. As in the ‘doggrooming.com’ example above, ‘doggrooming.com’ is very easily remembered, contains the most relevant keyword phrase and describes the web site in explicit detail. It is the ‘perfect’ domain name for this particular web site.

Select the Best Domain Extension

Another consideration of importance is the domain name extension. Although there are many new domain extensions available, dotcom is still the best choice. When typing in a web address, Internet users automatically want to type in a .com extension, as this is the extension that has been embedded into our brains from the start.

Avoid Using Numbers in Your Domain Name

Although you may be tempted to do so, avoid using numbers within your domain name. Including a number within your domain name can cause problems, as when you tell someone your web address, you will continually have to tell them it’s a number and not the word. For example, if you selected a domain name like number1host.com, if you were to tell someone your web address, they may try to type it as ‘numberonehost.com’ instead of ‘number1host.com.’ This type of domain name would cause confusion.

Avoid using Dashes and Underscores in Your Domain Name

Although many people do it, don’t make the same mistake I made when I first started out. Avoid using dashes, underscores or any other characters within your domain name that may cause confusion. When I registered my domain name, Web-Source.net, I actually wanted websource.com; however, it had already been registered. So, I settled for Web-Source.net. Now, when I tell someone my domain name, I have to say it like this: web dash source dot net.

Don’t get me wrong, www.Web-Source.net is now a high traffic web site, but I can only imagine how much traffic I’ve lost over the years due to my domain name. I have received many emails over the years from visitors who had a hard time finding my site. They said they couldn’t remember the domain name and kept wanting to type in websource.com.

Avoid using Abbreviations within Your Domain Name

Although well-known companies, such as IBM, can get away with using abbreviations within their domain name, most companies can’t. As a rule, try to avoid using abbreviations or anything that will be difficult for your visitors to remember. Not only will this cause confusion, but it can also cause your potential visitors to make spelling mistakes when trying to type in your web address.

Avoid using Long Domain Names

Although you may now register long domain names, it’s really not a good idea. I learned this lesson the hard way. I registered ‘www.workfromhomebusinessguide.com’ and the sad thing is … I can’t remember the domain name half the time. How can I expect my potential visitors to remember it? Try to keep your domain name as short as possible. The longer the domain name the harder it is to remember and the more apt your potential visitors are to make a typo when typing it into their browser.

Ensure Your Domain Name is Not a Trademark Infringement

Prior to registering a domain name, you may want to consider searching the Trademark Electronic Search System, http://www.uspto.gov/main/trademarks.htm to ensure your potential domain name isn’t infringing on any trademarks.

Please don’t take this point lightly, as trademark infringement could cost you your entire business. It is your responsibility to ensure that your potential domain name doesn’t infringe on any registered trademarks, as the trademark laws that apply in the hard copy world also apply on the Internet. Any company that registers a trademark has the right to protect their trademark and has the right to notify you that your domain name is infringing upon their trademark.

When you’re ready to begin, create a list of a dozen or more potential domain names, as chances are, your first choice will already be taken. With any luck, one of the domain names on your list will be available.

Take your time and select a quality domain name that will grow with your business. It will be well-worth your time and effort in the long run.

Building Your Own Web Server Tip4: Selecting Windows for Web Server

July 18, 2010 by admin

Which Windows Operating System should I install to my Web Server?

Maybe this is the first challenged and tough step to have faced with.

Most of you must be using MS Windows XP, MS Windows Vista or MS Windows 2000 on your computer.

But these softwares do not have ability to host and run your website.

In order to host and run web site, the computer MUST have special component called “DNS: Domain Name System”.

Someone sends signal to your website with your domain name ‘www.yourdomainname.com, but the web server does not recognize the address ‘www.yourdomainname.com’.
It can only recognize with the number format like ’123.234.345.456′ which called IP(Internet Protocal) address.

DNS is taking care of this internal process.
That is why you need to install the different Windows operating system to your web server.

There are many operating systems that can provide this DNS service for web server.
UNIX, Wnidows NT, Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

Since most people use Windows, I don’t recommend the UNIX. Some people say it is likely more stable than Windows, but is an old story.

Since MS Windows 2000 server, Wnidows OS has become more stable and reliable than UNIX.

For Windows, which one is best…?

Personally I recommend MS Windows Server 2003.

Because it is the same background and functionalities with your favorite Windows XP. Only different is that the Windows Server 2003 has DNS and server administration tools.

But if you are still using Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server could be the best OS for your web server.

How to Go Selecting a Cheap Web Hosting Company?

July 12, 2010 by admin

If one is forming a group of web site or a business web site, the main thing is that his/her agenda must to find good, dependable, cheap webhosting for his/her site. In nearly all cases, a free hosting service never works. One will quickly find out that there’s a broad range of prices that are nearly affordable, and what are the services that comes with the web-hosting package.

Things to be considered while selecting a web-hosting package

Before taking any decisions, one should know very clearly that what he/she needs. One should also know the purpose of his/her web site and what are the things he/she requires from the server. For example, if one is planning to host a web-based community forum, he/she certainly needs a web host, which gives PHP and an SQL database. On the other hand, if one is planning for running the Active Server Pages, or .NET applications, he/she should need a server running on Windows rather than a UNIX or Linux code base.

Realize the need before searching, which is far easier to select rather than changing afterwards.

One should look for the best plans.

Accompaniments can change a cheap web-hosting package into an expensive one before one knows it completely. Mainly hosting packages permit one to add on a la carte items as one requires them, but it may get expensive afterwards. If the web host one has chosen, charges a setup fee for the shopping cart, which one didn’t think he/she’d need, it could easily be the same as of several month’s hosting fees. Thus ,one should decide what he/she will need, then should get more than what one expects he/she’ll use.

Cheapest web host, providing 24/7 support.

Ideally, one’s web hosting provider must admit any request for assisting his/her client within an hour with a predictable time of completion. One’s host server should provide his/her client with a searchable known factor to guide him/her through most familiar tasks, which one needs to-do, and support desk to help one online at any time.

Despite how cheap a web host cost is, if it’s not working, then one is surely wasting his/her money for no use. However, before signing up with a web-hosting provider, one should supervise them for a while, or must ask around on forums about their previous records. A hosting service MUST be reliable. A hosting service which is not able to keep one’s site online and available may only lose his/her business and money. So be cautious!!

Things One Should be Aware of While Selecting a Web Host

There are several web hosts which try anxiously to get contract of hosting from the user to root themselves in the beginning era into a stable hosting provider, for that they hide several things from the user. Coming next are the things which the user should never hope to be get informed from there host. For an instance, web hosts which are new in the market, many times do not have the facility to provide service to the users. Low cost or budget web hosting services are generally comes in such sort of category. In this there are two categories of hosts, one, who neglects to provide details of services to the users and another who show the mirage of outstanding (24/7) service which, is a mere misconception.

There are several hosts in the market which are cheap, however, not experienced in this field. One straightforward and ideal way to inquire about the level of service is to get the customer care number and apply it before dealing with the host. This will prove whether the service is up to the expectation or not.

Another hidden fact is that several web-hosting enterprises are inexperienced. The user should verify that the host he/she is dealing with is experienced or not, even to some extent. The user has the right to know about the work experience of the host because no one wishes to become a puppet for conducting experiments.

Another crucial factor is that while dealing with a low cost or budget web hosts, the host may be involved in several other businesses including web hosting. The user should remain aware of their other sorts of businesses or projects before signing up with them. In hosting a user requires specialized person instead of generalized person bearing various tasks together, applying both resources and time for providing faithful services to the customer.

It is also a misconception that few cheap web hosts will definitely provide the promised bandwidth, which is not true in real sense. It is important that they should not advertise one thing and end up providing something else as it can be treated as a fraud.

Preferring short term contracts at beginning is one of the ideal ways to prevent oneself from any of the undesirable surprises. Doing payment as per monthly charges can be effective. This will not only display one as a responsible and smart user but also assists to easily change the host in the condition of dissatisfaction.

Selecting an Ideal Web Host?.it Demands Time

There are several people who focus much while selecting a website designer, but overlook several factors while selecting a website host. It happens with several people that they take there host seriously only after there website goes offline, as this is not a completely forbbidable issue. As one cannot avoid such issues frequently, this will assist the user to select an ideal website host. This article wraps three causes why one should denote time to the good website host selection process.

This article covers three reasons why you should spend some time looking for a good website host.

1. Vanished sales:

It is a general fact that, any business proprietor understands that a user’s sale will go into crater if his/her website is down. If a user denotes time while searching for a website host with least downtime, then he/she can take a sweet nap at the night lobbing away the worry of sales on site.

Consider an example where Oliver, an internet business owner had a problem with his web host and problem was so terrific that the web site server went down and his other businesses also get effected. The biggest trouble was he was running a Pay Per Click Advertising Campaign with several Pay Per Click Search Engines like Google Adsense, Overture etc. When problem came he immediately had to quickly disable all his ads until his website came online again. Afterwards he realized that it was better to look after his website by his own rather than relying on anyone else.

2. Vanishing of Advertising Revenue:

If one talks about the additional business model on internet then it includes sites concern to advertisement and contents. They have a very interesting pattern of doing business, they declares to provide an ample amount of free content but charge when people click on contexts and banners publishing advertisements. There are few popular websites which have several people a day and the account of slaughtering of revenue from the advertisement can be shocking.

Talking about a case, Yahoo.com was down one day due to a huge rejection of service Attack. Though, web host was not responsible for that. When a user’s website favors advertisement and it is the main revenue source then, here is the requirement of a host who not only ensure it’s firmness but also believes the user that it has a dependable internet linkage.

3. Failure to expand one’s website:

User chooses a professional host to command his/her website because of his/her own strangeness to hosting scenario. One cannot consider a low priced deal as an outstanding deals because when user wishes to expand his/her website later on, then he/she find the host unable to provide the essential support.

The example of Peter is quite fitting here. Peter wanted to add a sql database for this new script so that he can reduce cost. There were only 2 plans being offered by his web hosting company and the difference in one extra website was dollar fifty. Peter thereafter spent extra time searching for another website host. Such situation to search for another host is not necessary that every one will get. So it is better to think about future prospects in advance before selecting a web host.

At the end, one can say that selecting a web host is not a casual decision because it is an integrated part of one’s internet commerce business. Anticipation is that above highlighted points will definitely help the user to choose a good web host. If yes, the purpose of this article is fulfilled.

The Abc’s of Online Web Hosting – What you Need to Know Before Selecting a Host!

June 24, 2010 by admin

When selecting a web hosting service, there is more to consider than just price alone. A web hosting service can often provide benefits such as guaranteed uptime and customer service support as well as amazing tracking tools that help you grow your business.

When choosing a web hosting service provider, go back to the basics. Follow the ABC’s of finding a good web hosting service and you will reap the benefits for years to come.
A – Advertising -

Depending on the type of web hosting service you select, you may be required to place advertisements on your site. To build a respectable web presence, choose a web hosting service that will not require advertisements on your site. These ads distract consumers and cause traffic to be redirected away from your webpage.
B – Business Knowledge -

Many web hosting services offer sophisticated software to help you analyze your online business. This software is invaluable as it often provides the only real read you have on whether your online marketing is working. Look for software that tells you how many total visitors and unique visitors you have. You can also find out how many times people are clicking on the different links within your site and how they found your site to begin with.
C – Competitive Pricing -

While pricing is not the only factor to consider, it should definitely be mentioned. When selecting a web hosting service provider, ask what is included in the cost. You will often find that different companies will offer different packages, so you need to find the one that best meets your needs. And remember the old adage – you get what you pay for. If a deal seems too good to be true, then watch out, because it just might be.
D – Domain Name Usage -

When selecting a web hosting provider, choose one that will allow you to use your own domain name instead of being required to use a subdomain of their domain name. People will be confused and not able to find your site if the web address is not intuitive and unique.
E – Email Accounts -

Many web hosting packages provide you with a certain number of email accounts included in the package. Take stock of what you will need for email accounts and make sure to get enough. For example, even if it is a one person business, it often makes sense to have several different email accounts to seem more official. Some example emails you might want include: webmaster@yourcompany.com, customerservice@yourcompany.com, complaints@yourcompany.com, and president@yourcompany.com.
F – FTP Access -

Unless you want either a cookie cutter site or a custom site that takes the web designer forever to upload to the server, you will definitely need FTP access as part of your web hosting service package. FTP access allows your webmaster to upload unique sites and make changes in a more efficient manner, which will save you money in the long run since you will pay less for the time it takes to upload your website.
G – Guaranteed Uptime -

Last, but certainly not least, is guaranteed uptime. While no web hosting provider can guarantee 100% uptime, look for one that has multiple servers and 24-7 support so that you are guaranteed as much uptime as possible. If a server goes down in the middle of the night, you don’t want your website traffic to have to wait until the next business day in order to be able to view your site.

Understanding Web-hosting: Selecting an Ideal Server

June 20, 2010 by admin

Web Hosting is a process of providing customers with servers that are connected to the Internet, enabling them to display their websites pertaining to their private or professional businesses. With the growing age of the Internet, it has become vitally important for individuals, to expand their network online. But choosing a Web Host is certainly not an easy task; mainly because of the availability of the many and the varied services offered by each web hosting provider. Thus it becomes imperative to match your essential requirements with the amenities provided by your Web-Host.

The foremost factors that one must keep in mind pertain to the web-host’s reliability and technical efficiency. Differently put, services such as security, disk storage capacity and maintenance facilities should be ensured. Whether your Web Hosting provider is laced with an online SSL security certification and a powerful Spam Filter or not, must be made certain of. It is essential in order to safeguard your data from viruses and hackers. A satisfactory level of bandwidth (a tool that manages the internet traffic rate) must also be obtained to guarantee the fast speed of the website. You should also make sure that your service provider also offers sufficient data storage capacity, as per your pre-requisite; along with a 24/7 live email service with technical maintenance. Other services that one must look for include, scripting support (ability to run scripts on the server), uptime and backup services in case of accidental deletion.

Any Web Hosting service can broadly be characterized into two categories, namely Shared Hosting and Dedicated Hosting. The former refers to the involvement of one server with many other websites. Its basic advantage is its low cost, but at the cost of speed and efficiency. As many websites share a single server, it tends to slow down. However, shared hosting is advisable for the sites with expected low traffic. The latter, on the other hand, refers to an exclusive server for the website, which is best suited for the sites that expect high traffic.

Further, when it comes to web hosting, Australia, Europe, Canada, US and such developed countries distinctly enjoy a niche technological advantage over their third world counterparts for obvious reasons. However, much technological advancements have already taken place in this area across the globe, rendering the entire gamut of web hosting services significantly affordable in any part of the world. In fact, the extensive popularity gained by Internet in the recent few years bears enough testimony to the fact.
