Domain Names – Part 3

Multi-language sites:
French/English versions of the site can have a French domain name pointing to the French home page and an English domain name pointing to the English home page. This is an advantage when advertising your URL in language specific situations such as a French language newspaper.
Specializing:
If you have a large product line and you want to attract attention to a particular product, you could get a domain name especially for that product. For example, www.carparts.com would be your main domain name and www.radiatorcap.com could be the domain name that you have pointed to the radiator cap section of your web site. This could be preferable to having to advertise a URL like www.carparts.com/products/engineparts/radiators/caps.html which would be another option.
Merging companies, or historical considerations:
You may want to keep an old domain name for with the sake of your old clients, or to help keep the clients of the company you just purchased. In this case, just pointing the old domain name to the new web site will automatically direct the old clients to your new company.
Key word searches:
Having key words (words that relate directly to the thing you do or sell) in your domain name will help with the search engine optimization of your web site. If you are Rob Brown the plumber and your business name is RB Services Inc, and your domain is rbservices.com, you could take advantage of this tactic by also registering the domain rbplumbingservices.com. This way, the word “plumbing” is in the domain and will be found by search engines when someone does a search for the word “plumbing.”
Multiple spellings:
If your preferred domain name has multiple spellings, such as “colour” or “color” for example, you may want to register your domain name with both spellings. With a company name like Back2Front, for instance, some people may type out “backtofront” instead of the correct spelling.. In this case, getting both domains is a good idea. This will make your web site easier to find for anyone who is just going by memory or by a verbal recommendation.
Domain Prefixes:
To get some of the advantages of additional domains without the extra cost of registering separate domain names, you can add prefixes to your domain name. For example: using the www.carparts.com example again, you could add a prefix like this: www.radiatorcap.carparts.com. Depending on the context, this prefix may be referred to as: Sub Domain, Domain Prefix, or Hostname. The domain registry is not involved in the set up of a domain prefix. The only person involved is the person looking after the name service for your domain. In many cases, this will be your hosting service provider. If you are a Back2Front client just ask and we will set it up for you.
Multiple TLDs :
In addition to getting multiple domain names or using domain prefixes, you may also want to consider multiple TLDs (Top Level Domains) of your domain name. For example: www.carparts.com, www.carparts.ca, www.carparts.net, www.carparts.org. The registry is involved in this case. Reasons for this are:
Defending your online identity.
If you only register one TLD, other companies could register using the same name with a different TLD, and your clients could get confused and do business with them instead. For example: If you registered the domain name ABCaccounting.ca, then someone else (another accountant) registered ABCaccounting.com, you can see how some of your clients may go to ABCaccounting.com and not realise that they are visiting the wrong web site. At Back2Front, since we do business primarily in Canada, we encourage our clients to get both the .com and the .ca names. Some of our clients have gone so far as to register all the TLDs they can get their hands on to prevent other companies from using them.
Sharing a domain name by using a different TLD.
What if the domain name you want is already taken? If the company that has the “.com” version of the domain name is not a competitor, and therefore the likelihood of confusion is small, you may want to register the “.ca” version of the name or any of the other TLDs that make sense to you. For instance, we have back2front.ca but we do not have back2front.com (they are a stage back drop company in the UK.)
When considering domain names for your web site, it is not necessary to narrow it down to just one name. For the many reasons listed above, having more than one domain can be very useful.

I am looking to buy some domain names, but would like to purchase them from the same place that will host them. Is there a site out there that will allow me to purchase my domain names and get free hosting for them as well? I have already found bravehost, but would like to compare it with other similar sites. I have not been able to find any. Does anyone know of where I might be able to purchase domain names and get free hosting as well?

Choosing Domain Names for Your Business

Let’s say that you’re creating a website for Barb’s Specialty Pet Products. Should the domain name be barbsspecialtypetproducts.com?
Perhaps — but don’t stop there. Having the right domain name, or domain names, can bring more traffic to your site.
Why more than one domain name?
One domain is all you need to set up a website. But with more domains directing to your site, you can have these additional benefits:
- Bring site visitors who type variations of your domain name
- Acquire traffic that might otherwise go to your competition
- Harness the marketing power of keyword domains
Your primary domain name
If it’s feasible, use your business or brand name in your primary domain. People will remember it and associate it with your business. Also consider the following factors when choosing your primary domain.
Domain name extensions
Should your primary domain end with .com, .net, or .biz, or with a country-specific extension such as .ca or .co.uk?
If your website is aimed at people in a specific country, having a country-specific domain can help:
- Site visitors will recognize right away that the business has a presence in the country of the extension. They may therefore be more comfortable buying from you.
- Some country-specific search results include sites with the relevant country-specific domain extension even if the site isn’t hosted in that country.
On the other hand, if you’re targeting an international audience, a country-specific domain could work against you. People from outside the country of the extension may be less inclined to buy if the business looks foreign to them.
If you want to attract both people within your country and those in other countries, have both. Each domain could direct to the same site, with each audience seeing the domain intended for them. For country-specific search results, the primary domain should be the country-specific one.
Chances are that the .com domain you want is already taken. If you use the .net or .biz version, you risk having potential site visitors go to your .com competition instead. Be sure to use the full domain name on all promotional material to reduce this risk.
Domain name length
A short domain is easier to remember, it has less risk of being mistyped, and it’ll fit easily on your business cards and correspondence.
Conversely, if a short name doesn’t represent your business, it’s more difficult for people to remember. The short names you like may already be taken anyway.
If your business name is up to three easy-to-spell words, it’ll probably work as a domain name. For a longer business name, the initials or just one or two words may be easier than remembering a combination of words.
Secondary domain names
Secondary domains directing to your site are for online use:
- For people who type your primary domain name incorrectly
- For people who search for your products or services online
Typing and spelling variations
How many ways can people spell and type your business name?
barbsspecialtypetproducts.com
barbs-specialty-pet-products.com
barbspecialtypetproducts.com
barbsspecialitypetproducts.com
barbsspecialitypetproducts.com
barbspecialtyproducts.com
barbspecialtyproduct.com
Hyphens aren’t recommended for your primary domain. When people tell others about your site, they’re likely to omit the hyphens. They may also forget to type them.
For secondary domains, hyphens make long domains easier to read. Each word stands out when people see your domain. However, domains such as buy-keyword-product-now.com make some people view hyphenated domains, especially those with more than one hyphen, as spam-like.
Having the words in domains separated may help some search engines recognize keywords. With Google, though, hyphens don’t make any difference.
Consider all of these variations for secondary domain names:
- With and without hyphens
- Different ways of spelling some words
- Singular and plural versions of nouns
- Extensions with .com and .net as well as a country-specific extension if relevant
What people search for
If you want to find the website for Time magazine, you might do a search for it, or you might try typing in time.com. If you do the latter, you’ll find yourself at the Time site.
This type of search behavior extends to generic words too. Searching for dog collars? Try dogcollar.com, for example, and you’ll be redirected to dogidcollar.com. Do you want life insurance? Lifeinsurance.com redirects to nmfn.com (and so does northwesternmutualfinancialnetwork.com).
While having keyword domain names may not draw a lot of site visitors, using them is a technique to consider.
How to use more than one domain
Set up your website with your primary domain, and use that domain on your correspondence and with your customers.
Point secondary domains to your site using URL forwarding (also called domain forwarding, domain redirect, or URL redirect). To have the secondary domain appear in the browser, use domain masking. You can set up these features when you log in to your account with your domain registrar (if your registrar offers these services).
With domains that are simply variations of your primary domain, you can expect additional traffic just from having set up these domains. With domains that contain keywords, you can get more from them by using them to list your site in online directories. When these domains appear in search results, searchers will see the keywords.
The next step
Once you decide on the available domains that you want, register them immediately. They might not be available tomorrow.
If you don’t already have a business name, you’ll find it easier to market your business online if you choose a primary domain and a business name together. If your first choice for a business name doesn’t work well with any available domains, consider a business name that you can easily market with an available domain. Once you’ve registered that domain name and your business name, register secondary domains and put them to use.
Is it worth registering multiple domains for one site? That depends on your site, but any variations that you don’t register will be available for competitors to register and use. If a domain is valuable to a competitor, it’s valuable to you.

Investing and Making Money Out of Domain Names

Maybe you’ve seen advertisements on websites, or heard stories about a guy who made his fortune as a cheap domain reseller – buying and selling domain names as a business, instead of just for personal use. Maybe you already have a domain reseller account with your Internet service provider (ISP), just waiting to be used. But is it a good idea to buy and sell domains as a business?
Luck of the Draw?
There’s a lot of hype attached to the domain reselling business. CNN reported that “business.com” was sold for $7.5 million in 1997, and in 2003 “men.com” was sold for $1.3 million, but these are unusual cases involving very specific domain names, and most domain investors will never get that lucky. Partly this is because it’s difficult to value domain names, and partly this is because of misconceptions that all “good” names are taken. In addition, the availability of country code domains has opened up the domain naming field, allowing people to buy and sell domains with short names and new extensions.
What Makes One Domain More Valuable Than Another?
As stated above, valuation of domain names is extremely tricky. This is because the market to sell domains is driven by the perceived scarcity of “good” names. Most business owners, whether their companies are large or small, prefer a name ending in .com over a name in any other top level domain. As well, memorable combinations of relevant words that can easily be used in a domain name are already in use. Adding to the price increase is the fact that while more than 17 million domain names have been sold, not every one of them is necessarily good. Generally, in order to be saleable, domain names, in addition to ending in .com, must also be fairly generic. “Law.com” “tv.com” and “business.com” are classic examples. (CNN paid several thousand dollars for the tv.com in the early 2000’s.) The reality is that most of these domains will never be resold, and will end up being released for registration at the standard rate of $10-$30/year. The notion that highly priced domains must be one word is a myth, however. Word combinations can be extremely valuable if the words are relevant especially considering their value in terms of

Internet address… Domain name… www dot something… There are probably no words in today’s everyday life that are used more often that these. Internet has entered each and every aspect of our lives and is considered to be one of the biggest inventions of all times.
Still, how many people really understand the value of domain name; that part of internet address that follows www.? Better yet, how many people HAVE Internet address with their own domain name? Do people realize that their domain name might be the biggest asset they actually have?
If you run a business, it’s no news anymore that having an Internet address for customers to find you is an imperative. Having an Internet address with the business related domain name is almost necessary for online success. It’s your ID in the online world.
And then there are personal web pages i.e. Internet addresses. With continuous growth of Internet, more and more people start their own personal web pages to share their personal interests, hobbies etc. They simply wish to mark their presence on the Internet and to do that easily they tend to personalize their domains.
The most common way of getting your own domain name is by getting it from a free web hosting provider. However, the risk of doing that is far greater than people think. What it comes down to is that you simply DO NOT OWN your web site / Internet address / domain name. In other words, if that free web hosting provider runs out of business, you LOSE EVERYTHING. Another big obstacle when choosing your own domain name is the fact that most of the TLDs names (top level domains such as .com, .org and .biz) are already taken.
Luckily, there’s an alternative…
For almost a decade now, people are using the benefits of being a .ws domain owners. By registering with GDI (Global Domains International), one of the fastest growing INC 500 companies today, you get to see the true meaning of “value for money” principle. For $ 10,- per month you get to chose your own domain name, but more importantly – you get to OWN it, as well as your 10 pages web site, 10 email addresses, a web site builder and an email forwarding service.
If this still doesn’t seam good enough to you, GDI offers all the above as an actual product for you to pass on i.e. to sell to other people as a GDI Affiliate. Should you choose that, there’s an outstanding ongoing support system in place and incredible 5 levels affiliate commissions program. So, you have a safe and professional web hosting package on one side and a highly demanded product / service to earn from, on the other. If you’re familiar with Affiliate business at all, you’ll recognize the power of promoting a highly demanded product that requires no warehousing, but is instantly delivered.
All in all, with Internet being everybody’s business today, GDI and its .ws are turning into and therefore rightfully being called A NEW .COM BOOM and the most reliable MLM system today.
So, do you have your own .ws domain yet?
