Shadow Copies Deleted After Defragmenting Windows Server 2003 Volume

July 28, 2010 by admin

Windows Server 2003 includes a new feature of Volume Shadow Copy Service, which allows recovering lost or inadvertently deleted shared files and folders. The feature remedies the problem of permanent file deletion in Windows Server 2000, due to which a file deleted from across the network is not placed in Recycle Bin but is permanently gone. On the other hand, it does not prove a complete alternative to backups. This is because that shadowed data resides on the same volume on which the original data has been stored. Thus, if this volume becomes corrupt or is formatted, there would be no other way to restore from traditional backup or use a powerful Windows Data Recovery product.

For example, consider a situation when you try to run Disk Defragmenter utility on a shadow copies activated volume in Windows Server 2003-based computer. You notice that some or all of shadow copies of data are deleted or lost. You observe a definite pattern that the oldest shadow copies of data are deleted first. When you view the System log, you come across errors suggesting disk space issues.

Cause

The described behavior results because of file system cluster size issues. The System Shadow Copy provider uses a cluster size independent mechanism, called copy-on-write, which typically functions at 16-KB block level. This problem occurs when cluster size is smaller than 16 KB. In this situation, the System Shadow Copy provider fails to correctly distinguish between defragmentation I/O and typical I/O operations. As a result, it carries on with cop-on-write operation, which increases the storage area of Shadow Copy. It starts deleting the data copies once the storage area comes to its defined limit.

Solution

To solve the above issue, you are suggested to reformat the volume using 16-KB or larger cluster allocation unit size.

Since the reformatting process causes the entire volume data to delete, you will need to restore it from a traditional backup. If this fails or is unavailable, windows partition recovery solutions come to rescue. Windows Data Recovery products are high-end tools with unique and safe technology to recover lost data and partitions.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Software is an unmatched recovery solution to restore damaged, lost, deleted or formatted disk partitions. It is a non-destructive windows partition recovery product with rich set of features, such as Disk Cloning, Disk Imaging, S.M.A.R.T features, RAW File Recovery and more. Dynamic Volumes Inaccessibile in Windows Server 2003 after Upgrade

Windows Server 2003 doesn’t support all FTDisk (fault-tolerant) volumes that have ever existed in Windows NT Server 4.0 installed computer system. For this reason, when you upgrade your computer to Windows Server 2003, some of dynamic volumes might remain inaccessible. Along with other symptoms, you cannot access the data stored in these volumes. To restore them, Microsoft suggests using FTonline utility that allows you to temporarily mount the volumes and hence, backup data from. If due to any cause backup fails or you find it unfeasible using the tool, it is recommended to use Windows Partition Recovery products that allow recovering inaccessibile and lost disk partitions.

For example, consider you use a Windows NT Server 4.0 based computer system and create spanned, mirrored, striped or striped volumes with RAID 5 parity. You upgrade to Windows Server 2003, but when you try to access any of previously created volumes, you fail to do so. Additionally, when you view the Disk Management, these volumes are visible with ‘Healthy (Unknown Partition)’ status. The listing shows these volumes with no associated drive letter.

The similar behavior is observed when you move disks containing previously created NTDisk volumes on a basic disk of a Windows 2000-based computer system to a Windows Server 2003 installed computer

Cause

By design, Windows Server 2003 doesn’t support previously created Windows NT 4.0 FTDisk volumes.

Solution

Following sequence of steps can help you recovering from the existing issue:

Use FTonline utility that allows temporary data access to the inaccessibile FTDisk volumes. You can then take a full data backup of the volumes

After the backup process is done, you should delete those volumes

Convert the volumes to Dynamic disks and restore data from backup

If using FTonline is not possible or the backup comes out to be invalid when you try to restore, you need a Partition Recovery Software. Built with powerful partition recovery technology, these Windows Partition Recovery utilities prove highly-competent tools to recover and restore inaccessibile, damaged, missing or lost Windows partitions. You can use these products in any instance of Windows partition loss.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is a professional and completely reliable partition recovery tool with advanced options and features. It is a safe Partition Recovery Software that supports Windows 7 RC1, Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000 based systems. The tool provides you features like Append Header, RAW File Recovery, Save Scan and more.

Data Recovery After System Crash Using HP-UX Based UNIX Server

The servers like file servers, application servers, database servers, mail servers, domain controllers,Visit Here Now http://recovermyfilessoftware.blogspot.com

Web Servers and NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices create the backbone of modern corporate record storage. Such server setups generally use multiple hard drives configured together in disk arrays. Due to continual operation and large volume of user requests, such hard drives may physically or logically fail and cause serious data loss. There are various NOS (Network Operating System) that maintain all the data and information for such network environments. For instance, in HP-UX UNIX, such issues can be taken care of by performing HP UNIX Data Recovery.

For UNIX server operating systems like HP-UX, the common reasons behind data loss are as follows:

1.) Erroneous or missing server registry configuration: The registry is a database of configuration settings. If you face any issues with the registry, your server may crash and the critical data stored in it will become unusable.

2.) Intermittent drive failure due to system software issues: The server configuration can get severely impacted due to such problems. The system software (here HP-UX UNIX operating system) may get corrupt due to various issues like incorrect shut down, virus infection, vandalism etc.

3.) Failure of multiple drives: In setups like RAID (Redundant Array of Independent/Inexpensive Disks) arrays, the hard drives undergo continual stress due to large volume of data transfer. Thus, there is always a probability of software or hardware level crash due to such constantly utilized storage setups as RAID or JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) in UNIX.

4.) User errors as accidental deletion: At times, the users at the client-end erroneously delete certain data as database records, personal folder files, shared resources and more. To salvage such critical files from the hard drive, you need to opt for HP UNIX Data Recovery.

Such issues can easily be resolved by implementing efficient recovery tools. In other words, you need to take certain minimum precautions as to avoid any disk overwrite operations or opening the hard disk. In such situations, we need to narrow down to the nature of system failure. A system (as here a HP-UX UNIX based server) failure can fail due to software based corruption or hardware based malfunction. You can extract all your lost data with the help of quality data recovery software and efficient data recovery services. The hard drive can be connected as a slave or using an interface adapter device (as a chassis or a cable). The unix data recovery software should be installed on a working system/hard drive to scan the affected hard drive.

Generally, these software provide the preview feature, so that you can preview the lost files detected by the recovery software and recover them as per your preference. After you are done with the selection, you can simply save them to a safe location as a hard drive (you should en sure that you do not save the recovered files to the affected hard drive, not even to a different and healthy partition of it). Then, you can go for a clean operating system (HP-UX) reinstall. You will need to configure your server from the beginning and it is highly recommended that you opt for automated data backup on some different storage media. The recovery service a step ahead of the recovery software. The recovery experts carry out optimum recovery of critical server data through advanced component level steps like opening the hard drive and repairing the malfunctioned parts. They provide solutions for extracting all critical server data post both physical and logical failures.

Stellar Phoenix HP UNIX Data Recovery is efficient hp unix data recovery tool. The software supports recovery from JFS 3.0, 3.1 and 3.3 file systems. This Data Recovery HP UNIX tool supports recovery from SCSI, SATA, EIDE and IDE hard drives.
